My PHIlosophy:
Math is present all around us in our daily lives. Math is a subject dealing with numbers, letters, and formulas, requiring application of previous knowledge and a clear understanding of vocabulary terms. One must have a foundation in order to build upon new topics and concepts. A mathematics major is a logical and quantitative thinker, and a creator. They can problem solve, reason and proof, communicate, and make connections as well as representations through mathematics. Besides that, they are consistent, hard workers who explore and analyze data to draw conclusions.
Through countless hours of experience in fieldwork and courses taken over the years, I have learned that a teacher must be interesting and keep student’s attention at all times with liveliness and energy. As a teacher I plan to show a sense of compassion, respect, and encouragement for my students, as well as providing them with a role model. I will apply enjoyable and entertaining educational games and activities in the classroom to keep students engaged and focused. The implementation of technology as well as differentiated instruction will help students reach their potential. Every student learns differently and teachers must meet the needs of each student in a variety of ways. This can be done through approaches such as cooperative learning, direct instruction, and inquiry learning.
Besides knowing your content inside and out, I believe a large part of being a teacher is being flexible and understanding of others. As a future educator, I value the importance of a teacher who is readily available to his or her students when necessary. Even further, being flexible means alternating lessons based on how well the students show understanding. I will make alterations to my lessons based on the students’ feedback. I will always keep in mind that a successful teacher will be committed and dedicated to improving the students as well as themselves because, “Those learn most from teaching others!” Math will serve as an important purpose for students in their future, so what better to do than to teach it.
